Three Dog Night told us that “One is the loneliest number,” and I’m here to tell you that it’s also the most dangerous number.

It’s the most dangerous number in business because it will put you out of business.

Consider
Franchisor has one supplier for products or services that are critical to the business. Something happens to that supplier. What happens to the franchisor’s business?

Consider
Franchisor has one sales person who gets a better job (well, maybe not today) or gets run over by a bus. What happens to the franchisor’s business?

Consider
Franchisee has one piece of equipment. It breaks down. Now the franchisee can’t be of service to customers. What happens to the franchisee’s business?

Consider
Franchisee has one advertising campaign that works. The campaign stops working, or the cost is doubled. What happens to the franchisee’s business?

You get the idea.

One of anything in business is almost always a train wreck waiting to happen. Start looking for the ones that exist in your business.

And just in case you’re thinking that two is better, remember that Three Dog Night also told us, “Two can be as bad as one.”

That’s why systems are critical in business. Systems are what make franchising work, both at the franchisor and franchisee levels. So take a look at your systems–for marketing, operations, training, customer relations, etc. If a system promotes one of anything, you’ve got a weak link.

Tweak your systems. Build them. Create them. And then make sure lots of people follow them!
