It wasn’t bad enough with the depressed economy. Now there’s swine flu. And the kids are home from school! More to complain about, if you’re a complainer. More to be concerned about, if you’re a worrier. More period.

Suddenly you get the idea you’ve lost control and there’s not much you can do about any of it any more.

Not true!

Here are 34  things you can do now to make a difference:

  1. Pick up the phone and call you best customer just to ask, “What can I do for you?”
  2. Call a franchisee and ask if you’re leading or just managing
  3. Get out from behind your desk and talk to a team member you’ve never talked to before. Find out what’s going on in his/her world outside of work.
  4. Join a Mastermind and learn what others like you are doing to improve and keep control.
  5. Spend a morning or afternoon with someone who does something completely different from what you do and find out how they do it and why.
  6. Calculate the cost of attracting a new customer or franchisee.
  7. Use your retirement money to invest in a different business.
  8. Calculate the value of an existing customer/franchisee
  9. Calculate the cost of keeping a customer and take a look at how you’re doing on that score.
  10. Write a blog to communicate with team members, customers, family and friends.
  11. Visit a local Dairy Queen. Or two!
  12. Take a trip and visit a customer/franchisee who has potential and needs encouragement.
  13. Get in the right business while you still can.
  14. Take your banker to breakfast. He needs a break.
  15. Give your sales team a gift card at Starbucks.
  16. Franchise your business
  17. Avoid the most dangerous number in business.
  18. Call a former employee and ask how you can be an even better leader.
  19. Take your spouse to the movies.
  20. Get emotional if you want to sell more.
  21. Become a hero to your franchisees.
  22. Calculate the maximized lifetime value of a customer.
  23. Call your business and see how things are handled. Could you get through to you?
  24. Get rid of your five worst customers/franchisees. They’re zapping you of time and energy.
  25. Organize your best franchisees in a Mastermind
  26. Help solve one of the three challenges your franchisees may be facing now.
  27. Understand why people buy your franchise, your product or service.
  28. Close your office on Fridays.
  29. Stay home to work for a day or two. You’ll get more done. Take a nap, too.
  30. Start writing a book about what you know and what others want to know that you know.
  31. Offer to teach a workshop.
  32. Answer your phone
  33. Volunteer to teach a workshop
  34. Work harder!
