The first lesson I learned from John Kinch was that franchise entrepreneurs expect the impossible. Since I would eventually work with more than 100 such entrepreneurs, mostly the founders and CEOs of franchise companies, it was the best first lesson to learn.

One phone call from a stranger 30 years ago has resulted in a journey that I could not have imagined or created in any other way. The stranger was a franchisor, a term that I didn’t recognize at the time. He had a writing project and said he needed my help. Today I cringe at the thought of what might had happened had I not answered my own phone back then. What if I had had Caller ID . . . or an administrative assistant? Fortunately I had neither. Fortunately that call created a new world for me. The next time your phone rings, there might be a new world in store for you, too!
